The Ordinary’s 100% Plant-Derived Squalane is a very stable oil that is an excellent hydrator for all skin types, especially oily and combination. It has a very lightweight feeling on skin, soaks in quickly, and leaves behind soft, supple skin. As with all The Ordinary products, it is very affordable 30 mL/1 oz. for $$7.90. Let’s take a closer look at Squalane, its benefits to skin, and my experience with it!
As mentioned in my review for Retinol 0.5% in Squalane, I have quite a fondness for Squalane. Besides Josie Maran’s Light Argan Oil that I used years ago, it is the first oil that I really fell in love with. My skin just loves it!
Why do I love Squalane?
Squalane is a dry oil that absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy feeling residue behind. The texture of Squalane is what I love most about this oil, because it really does live up to those claims! Another benefit of Squalane is it is non-comedogenic, meaning it has a low chance of clogging pores. (I won’t make the statement that it won’t clog pores at all, because I believe everything has that potential. However, the probability is low with Squalane. Perhaps a discussion for another day?)
Squalane is found naturally within our body, however its concentrations decrease as we age. This is one of the reasons Squalane absorbs quickly into skin, it is recognized by the body as a skin-identical ingredient. Our sebum is also partly composed of Squalane making it a prime candidate to fight over-active sebum activity. This is why Squalane is an excellent choice for oily, combination or acne prone skin types. It hydrates skin by sealing in moisture while “improving visible elasticity and texture.”
Oils for Oily Skin??
I have combination skin, and the thought of using an oil to hydrate my skin is counterintuitive for me. Why add more oil? A year ago, I strictly used gel moisturizers, nothing else. When I applied
the gel at night my skin felt matte and like I really didn’t have any product on at all. However, when I would wake up the next morning my skin was so greasy, especially in my t-zone. Ever since I have been using oil at night to seal in all of my treatments and serums, I have not had this problem. Now when I wake up my skin is supple, soft and most of the oil has fully absorbed. Crazy how that works..right?
Ever since I read in Victoria Health’s newsletter how Gill applies Squalane all over her body..I have been obsessed! The morning I read it, 4 am to be exact, I applied Squalane all over my body! I have chronically dry skin on my legs and texture issues (sorry if this is TMI!) For months I have been using Squalane right after I shower and apply Hyaluronic Concentrate from The Chemistry Brand. The results: smooth, silky, hydrated skin! Using these products along with The Ordinary’s Lactic Acid 10% once a week, the texture issues are gone, gone, gone!
The ingredient Squalane has become near and dear to my heart because of the change I have seen in my skin using it. So, I started buying other products that contain Squalane. One of my favorite oil cleansers has a Squalane base, (read about Biossance Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil here.) My beloved Jordan Samuel Skin treatment oil, Etoile with Retinol, also contains Squalane. My newest little gem that contains Squalane is a new treatment oil from The Ordinary, Retinol 0.5% in Squalane. Talk about stepping up my Squalane game! Yep, it contains Retinol…genius! You can read my review here. The Ordinary’s 100% Plant Derived Squalane is definitely worth consideration if you are looking for a dry, lightweight oil. I have already been through several bottles myself!
I hope reading about my Squalane Journey has been fun! I would love to hear in the comments if you have any experience with Squalane or what is your favorite oil! You can read about other favorites and recommendations from The Ordinary here. Until next time, Stay Happy & Beautiful!
