There are very few truly affordable acid exfoliators on the market that are formulated at the correct pH, don’t contain skin irritating ingredients like alcohol, and contain a high enough percentage of glycolic acid to truly make a difference on skin. The Ordinary knocks it out of the park with their Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution! This acid toner is a game changing product, especially for the younger audience that The Ordinary has been attracting on social media. It’s not only impressive for acid newbies, it is even impressive to acid veterans like myself!
Acids are a category of skincare that I don’t like to just “try out.” Mostly because the majority of products that are marketed as a “peel,” are poorly formulated or have a pH level that is not effective for exfoliation. Depending on the type of acid (salicylic, glycolic, etc.) the product must be within a certain pH range for it to actually be able to exfoliate skin cells. This toner is formulated in the range of 3.5-3.7, which is excellent because glycolic acid is ideally effective at a pH range of 3.0-4.0. (The closer to a ph of 3.6 for Glycolic, the better) Glycolic acid is very effective at treating hyperpigmentation and has “degreasing” properties making it an excellent choice for oily or acneic skin types. Some people cannot use glycolic acid because it is a small molecule that absorbs quickly. Increasing the chances of inflammation and irritation, especially for those with sensitive skin. For those with sensitive skin or that cannot use Glycolic without irritation, try Lactic Acid 5% +HA instead.
While I could list 4 different acids that The Ordinary makes on my list of favorites, I chose this one because it is mild enough to be used for acid newbies. Plus, just look at this bottle…it is HUGE! The bottle contains 8 oz. of product for $8.70 USD. What a steal! The packaging itself is brilliant with its twist top pointed tip, easily poured onto a cotton pad.
How & When to Use
Because you can’t scrub your way to good skin, this toner should be used instead of a facial scrub. Just pour onto a cotton pad and apply after cleansing at night. My favorite cotton pads I have recently discovered are by a brand called Intrinsics Naturally that make single use products for spas. Their Silken Wipes are super soft and gentle on skin, plus they don’t waste product by absorbing too much. In the morning you will wake up with smooth, glowing skin! Just make sure to use sun protection
when using this product, all the time!
Dupe for Pixi Glow Tonic?
Some have compared this toner as a dupe for Pixi’s Glow Tonic. I have never used Glow Tonic before, but it does have some similar ingredients. My IG friend Vanessa (@goalstogetglowing) has an awesome infographic comparing The Ordinary Toner and Pixi Glow Tonic on her blog.
